Our team at American Quality Painting has extensive experience in the house painting industry, and you can count on us to make your home look great. In our time in the industry, we have seen countless DIY-ers, and even other painting companies, make mistakes that negatively affect their finished results, and we want to help other painters avoid the same fate. In this article, we will go over a few common house painting mistakes and how to avoid them.

Common House Painting Mistakes to Avoid

  • No Preparation. One mistake that many DIY-ers make when it comes to house painting is failing to prepare. For example, many people, when painting the interior walls, will neglect to cover their furniture or to place drop cloths, which leads to paint getting everywhere and making a mess. Similarly, many people will skip sanding and priming the surface and paint it immediately, which leads to sub-par results. To achieve great results, all painters should take the time to prepare their sites properly.
  • Miscalculations. Another mistake that we see a lot when it comes to house painting is miscalculating the amount of paint you need to complete the project. This leads to the painters running out of paint halfway through. This is annoying enough on its own but can also lead to an even more annoying mismatch in the paint color, as batches of paint can differ slightly when they are mixed at different times. To avoid this situation, check your calculations carefully and order all your paint at the same time, including some extra for future touch-ups.
  • Poor Paint Selection. A third mistake that many inexperienced painters make is not choosing the ideal paint products for the project. Some paints can’t be applied directly over other paints—for example, latex-based paint can’t be applied over an oil-based one, as the latex paint will crack. To avoid this mistake, you can take a sample of your existing paint to a paint store and have the staff check if it is oil or latex based, or you can simply hire professional painters to do all the work, including these checks, for you.
